A thought leader is first and foremost highly influential.
She blazes her own trail with a bold, fierce persona and stands out as a leader. If you’re wondering if the term “thought leader” applies to you, this is the right post to read. It’s because certain additional characteristics identify you as a thought leader.
You are a thought leader if you…
-
Are active on social media.
These days, if you’re not on social media, you’re missing out on the latest news and information, as well as, disconnected from the pulse of society. Social media allows you to move mountains by what you see AND more importantly, by what you post on social media. -
Blog regularly.
Your blog gives you a voice in the marketplace. Your blog is the hub of the rest of your social media so if you’re not blogging, you’re robbing the marketplace of your perspective. I relaunched my blog last year and fell behind after a few months. Then, I relaunched it again last month and I’ve been blogging like crazy. I’d forgotten I had so much to say. I also forgot how much people really want to hear from me. People will miss you when you’re absent and praise you when you return. How kewl is that?!

Voice your opinion.
Your opinion may not be popular, but you don’t allow that to keep you from voicing it. You say what you have to say and address those who respond, quickly. For example, I shared a post on Facebook that reflected my thinking about our current president. Lots of people responded by sharing it and commenting. One person actually sent me a private message to engage in a debate. I declined. That’s the power of your voice as a thought leader!
-
Say something and people quote you. Your words are inspirational and motivational. When you speak or post, your followers retweet what you say on Twitter. For example, I’m known for one of my expressions as it relates to sales, “I charge for that!” I actually teach a whole segment with this name as part of my signature coaching programs.
-
Have a track record for creating extraordinary results for yourself and your clients.
Coaching changes people’s lives. As a thought leader, you understand your role in transformation and guide your clients to stellar outcomes. You inspire action, consistently and you know it. Your clients know it and so do those who want to hire you. Your accolades involve more than great testimonials; rather, it means you are highly respected in your field.
-
Are a sought-after speaker.
People know, like and recognize you as a trusted source and subject-matter expert. You are able to influence individuals, groups and organizations. In a recent Inc. magazine article, Geniecast CEO and Founder says,

-
Have a clear purpose and you live it intentionally.
Y
ou know your why and you leverage your influence to transform the planet. You walk your talk and it transcends your tribe and impacts the world. -
Connect with other top influencers.
You attract people who are also influential. Like you, they are dedicated to transforming the lives of others. You build powerful partnerships and discover ways to expand your impact and serve more people. Collaboration is one of your highest values. One of my favorite influencers is Bushra Azhar of the Persuasion Revolution. She’s built a growing movement of almost 15,000 followers, focused on using persuasive and influential marketing.
-
Think strategically.
You look for ways to make a difference. You’re a lifelong learner ready to discover new and different ways for everything to work better together. Your desire to grow always includes innovation and collaboration.
-
Are generous.

You believe there is always enough for everyone. Accordingly, you openly share your gifts and resources while encouraging others to do the same. You are generous and humanitarian. Your work is philanthropic and life-changing for those you serve.
So, let me ask you: Are you a thought leader?
If you believe you’re lacking in any of these points, let this post serve to challenge you and fuel your ideas.
