Bernadette L. Harris is an accountant, author, small business strategist, professional speaker, and trainer committed to “Keeping Small Business in Business.” As President of By The Book Accounting, she has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs across the country start, run, and grow thriving ventures. She is the Founder & Executive Director of Raising An Entrepreneur, a non-profit organization committed to teaching and training young people (ages 13-21) in the areas of money management and business development.
Bernadette’s sense of humor and ability to translate accounting language into “plain English” make her a popular workshop leader. She has conducted training sessions for the U.S. Small Business Administration and has developed her own seminar series. Bernadette has helped workshop participants and clients alike avoid costly mistakes and save thousands of dollars in taxes. She’s the founder of “The Efficient CEO Movement”, a free online community that provides resources and support for aspiring and existing entrepreneurs.
Bernadette, a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), earned a B.S. in Accounting from the nation’s oldest HBCU, Cheyney University of PA, and later earned her MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management and an MS in Fraud and Forensics from Carlow University. At heart, she is a true leader and teacher. While at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania she served as basketball team captain, a peer tutor, and a resident advisor. Before launching By The Book Accounting, she taught Algebra and Geometry and led a high school basketball team to a district championship during her first year of coaching. She has also taught accounting as an adjunct professor.
Bernadette shares her many talents with others in need. She has served as a mentor for teen girls for various youth organization and her church. She also serves on the board of directors of for two non-profit organizations that focus on family development and financial literacy.
All these things tend to keep her busy but she intentionally maintains a very balanced life. When she’s not working she enjoys cooking, movies, traveling, and outdoor festivals. Though a native of Miami, FL she now resides in the metro Atlanta area with her husband.
